Fabulous Fabrics!

As you know, the Madcap Cottage gents are simply mad for wonderful fabrics. Here's a room that we designed a few years back that serves as a testimony to our passion for texture, pattern, and color. See you at the ITMA Showtime Market this weekend in High Point, NC to scope the latest and greatest in textiles and trims.

John and I love nothing more than looking at fabrics… Honestly, it’s perhaps our favorite pastime after drinking cocktails and hanging out with the dogs and doing interpretive dance to the dulcet tunes of Miss Olivia Newton-John in her “Xanadu” days.

Says John, “Fabric gets my heart racing. I love the colors and the patterns and the possibilities. Fabric is transformative… And transfixing.”

I concur as I swirl the blue cheese-infused olive in my vodka martini and peruse the Madcap Cottage-designed living room in which I sit that features about 23 unique fabric patterns and about 63 different trims.

“Fabric and trims are just the best,” I note. “Give me some brush fringe and a blowsy cabbage rose on a fabulous linen, and it’s like the gates of heaven have opened and Mata Hari is doing the dance of the seven veils as liquor flows from the skies like pennies from heaven. I mean, fabric is maybe not so great as winning the lottery, but that has yet to happen, n’est-ce pas?”

As you can see, the Madcap Cottage gents like fabric. And how, and how!

So the Madcaps are over the moon to have been invited to attend this weekend’s ITMA Showtime Market, the twice-annual fabrics show hosted by the International Textile Market Association in our new favorite city of High Point, North Carolina. Convenient, n’est-ce pas? The ITMA Showtime Market takes place from December 8-11, so you can expect the Madcap Cottage boys to be bopping about from showroom to showroom as we take in the latest and greatest in textiles.

“Hello, Covington! Hello, Classical Elements! Hello, jobbers!”

I am still not exactly sure what a jobber is, but I am sure that I will like them.

Oh, how we cannot wait to see what’s trending in textiles right now. Will there be graphics in abundance or bouquets of florals? And will Radiant Orchid rear her purple-clad head?

Stay tuned, and do check out our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook posts on all of our finds. From a rundown of which fabulous flower patterns we spotted where to who drank too much and who ran amok, the Madcap Cottage social media plan will keep you covered.

See you in High Point, toots!

The Mighty, Mighty Lampshade!

Light Up My Life!

Look at this amazing ruched fabric lampshade that John and I spotted at the shop of uber-designer Robert Kime in London. Divine! Why not take your boring lampshades, and give them some sparkle...

Morning! I hope you had a lovely weekend… John and I holed up in the snow and watched movies and designed pillows. Yes, we design pillows for fun. And they will be debuting at the High Point Market in the spring, so stay tuned.

Here’s our “Idea of the Day.”

Have fun with your lampshades. You can take even the most vanilla of lamps and transform them with a magical lampshade. But if you don’t have access to a custom lampshade source, bust out the glue gun and have it. Target and Hancock Fabrics are both great sources for inexpensive lampshades, and then embellish, embellish, embellish! Think decoupage, rhinestones, grosgrain ribbon… There are really no rules: Just have some fun.

A standout lampshade will really help add oomph to a room, quickly and economically.

Send us photos of your handiwork!

On another note, I wanted to show you how to take a white wall and oomph it up with wallpaper. Here’s a “before” and “after” of our guest bedroom in Brooklyn. Why not “wow” a dull space with a deliciously patterned paper.

And, no, that was not a suggestion.

Here's our guest bedroom at Chester Court with a wallpapered ceiling but before we decided that the space needed extra "punch" courtesy of wallpaper on the walls.

A Glorious Guest Room!

Here's the very same guest room with the formerly white walls done up in Thibaut's Baron wallpaper from their Residence collection. Click on the image, above, to see the paper on the Thibaut website.

Let's Get Cozy!

The lovely and talented Nashville style setter Madison Murray Carlos featured our Brooklyn home on her fabulous blog, Cozy Majestic. Wow, what a glamorous treat. Click on the image, above, to see Madison's whole posting. So fun!

My “Dining Chair Dilemma” post sparked lots of feedback, and the consensus seems to be that I did the right thing by buying the plastic sleeve covers for the chairs. Ghetto fabulous, n’est-ce pas?

Moving on… Today, the lovely Madison Murray Carlos showcased our Brooklyn row house on her divine blog, Cozy Majestic, and John and I are over the moon. Madison has such lovely things to say about the Madcap Cottage gents.

Let’s see:

“If I could have anyone swoop into our little bungalow on the hill here in Nashville and put their magic touch on everything, it would be them.”

“Some commonly used phrases on their blog, Demystifying Design, include “Egads!,” “How droll!,”"Ooh la la!,” and “Bang bang, babycakes.” Does it get any better than that, y’all?”

I am just crazy for Madison. I think need a stiff cocktail right this very second to toast this fabulous post. Let’s bust out the Popov and pour 12 fingers. But no ice, it takes up too much room that the vodka could be occupying, n’est-ce pas?

Thank you, Madison! Bottoms up…

Sofa City, Baby!

Viva India!

John and I spotted this day bed in India and were instantly smitten. This comfy alcove totally inspired us to create a modified day bed that could function as a comfortable sofa with multiple functions. As I like to say, Always carry a digital camera or a smart phone. You never know where you might find inspiration.

Let’s talk about c-u-s-t-o-m! And I mean custom furnishings.

Ever wonder if you should go the route of a custom sofa?

Your space is awkward and the dimensions of your living room are anything but standard.., But, um, aren’t custom furnishings super expensive? So you call up Pottery Barn or Ballard and you order an off-the-rack couch, but it just doesn’t really fit the space that way that you wish it would.

So what do the Madcap Cottage gents think about going custom? We say, go for it! But you have to have the right craftsmen who can create something marvelous and at the right price.

Here’s a “for instance”: A client in Des Moines, Iowa (and, yes, we do lots of work in Iowa!) wanted a sofa for their basement rec room. They wanted a couch that could function as a sleeping space for grandkids, but the room wasn’t wide enough to accommodate a traditional sleeper. The second problem was that the doorway to room was narrower than normal–exactly 29″ so most ready-made or semi-custom sofas wouldn’t fit through the door.

That’s when we hit upon the day bed idea, a eureka moment lifted from a similar sofa style that we spotted in Turkey and will custom create for our Iowa client. This daybed style is as wide as a traditional twin mattress so it can function as a bed. Its two pieces can be separated as needed. The back will be an assortment of mismatched pillows that we are sourcing from Turkey and India. And because the piece is custom we will play with the dimensions. The room is small and storage limited so we designed the sofa base so baskets will easily fit underneath. This is where working with a professional really pays off: It’s like having a suit made. The sofa fits our client’s room and their lifestyle pefectly and it will more than likely outlast you.

Our atelier in LA crafted something amazing!

The price was on-par with sofas that we were sourcing from various North Carolina manufacturers, and it fits her space perfectly. And out client’s sofa was made in America, which we love.

So don’t overlook custom furniture!

If you need a custom furniture manufacturer, contact the Madcap Cottage gents, and we will happily price out a custom furnishing that will perfectly suit your space.

Turkish Delight!

This sectional in Turkey totally sparked our interest. We love a good, modified sofa that has lots of comfy seating for watching TV or reading a book.

Photo Finish!

And here's the finished custom sofa that we created for our client in Iowa. The multi-functional sofa fits our client's rec room perfectly, and it's super comfy thanks to the depth and the soon-to-come throw pillows that will sit against the wall. We will blog about the sofa once we have it installed and the pillows are in place.
