The highlight of my weekend in snowy upstate New York was stumbling upon this gorgeous farmhouse smack in the Catskills Mountains with its unparalleled use of color. These folks are perhaps even braver when it comes to the use of heavenly hues than the boys at John Loecke, Inc. Stunning, huh? And so brave... Gold star, folks!

Today we turn the Demystifying Design gimlet eye upon the Catskills Mountains in upstate New York, home to Madcap Cottage, our little escape. Our weekend was a blast, but instead of writing about our deliciously tailored burlap-wrapped bushes (so Martha Stewart, we are so proud) I have decided to show images of the most amazing collection of farm buildings painted like a box of confetti that fell from heaven.
Oh, the color! Oh, the fearless choices of big, bold, brash hues!
Wow, rarely in America do you see someone take a risk like this. This farmhouse sits on a quiet, windy road that extends from charming Bovina, New York to South Kortright and is plunked in the middle of the mountains. What a delicious treat to crest a ridge and see this candy confection sitting off to the side of the road…
As you know, I am always ranting on and on about the importance of painting your front door a bright color, and these folks went wild with a poppy pink. And how about the green, the blue, the scarlet…
I am smitten.
Um, look at this rainbow collective... I need to meet these fun, fearless folks.
Here's the entrance to the farmhouse... What a beautifully framed gateway to color heaven!
Even the mailbox at this farmhouse complex is acid green. As Mae West once said, "It's better to be looked over than overlooked." Words to live by, folks.
