Letter from London: Street Numbers!

Sloane Ranger!

London calling! John and I are crazy for this big, bold, and bodacious address that we spotted painted upon a terracotta-hued column near Sloane Square in the heart of London.

As you know, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of making a statement with your front door.

Paint your door a bright color.

Add interesting plantings in pots.

Hang up a big brass door knocker…

Or take a page from our perambulations around London…

John and I are in the British capital again this week shopping for a client, and we love the painted door numbers that your favorite two-some has spotted all over town. Simple, chic, and MAJOR impact!

Why not order a stencil kit from Martha Stewart, and create a totally bespoke door number with a little paint and a paint brush.

Wine Me, Dine, 64 Me!

If you have a column or a planter in front of your home, why not paint a street number upon it? Or paint a big number directly upon your front door.

Big & Bold!

This number 47 was totally wow-ee! I love the use of a primary color and a background hue to really create an impact.

Shopping the Spice Bazaar!

Spice Bazaar!

Here's John in Istanbul's historic Spice Bazaar. It might look like a madhouse, but the experience is actually surprisingly civilized and wonderful. The sights, the smells. Divine!

We hope you are having a fabulous week! Any design projects in the works? Any “before” and “after” projects that you want to show us? We are a sponge: We want to soak it all up, so don’t be shy.

Yesterday afternoon John and I shopped the Spice Bazaar, the vast, historic covered market in Istanbul’s Eminonu neighborhood. Unlike the even more famous and nearby Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar is a bit less touristy and “actual” Turks shop here not just folks from foreign lands seeking carpets, knock-off Prada and Gucci handbags, and trinkets.

We are crazy about the Spice Bazaar and not just for the amazing selection of Turkish delight, floral teas, herbs, coffees and such, but also for the neighboring plant and pet markets. Where else in the world can you stock up on green apple tea and saffron and then peruse the pomegranate trees and consider buying a pheasant or a pug dog or perhaps a few leeches to do some blood-letting at home? Leeches? Yes, leeches in giant jugs of water.

Old Spice!

John and I lapped up the teas, nuts, dates, and such at the Spice Market like a two-bit hussy to the male clientele at the Four Seasons New York hotel bar. J'adore nuts!

Plants A-Plenty!

A wonderful selection of plants, seeds, and bulbs can be had just outside the main Spice Bazaar. You will find everything from gorgeous orange trees, cactus, and shrubs to fragrant perennials. Note the jug of leeches to the right of the photo upon the small yellow table, but more on that as you scroll down to the last photo in today's installment.

Chickens, ducks, pheasants, and other birds for sale just outside the entrance to the Spice Bazaar.

As you wander through the plant market, you will notice large jugs filled with leeches that swim about contentedly. Apparently, these pesky little creatures are employed in traditional Turkish medicine. Um. I think I will stick to the ducks and dogs should I need a Turkish pet.
